The 28th annual Africa Tech Festival 2025 concluded with a strong call for policy unity and collaboration to secure Africa’s digital future. Over three days, the festival brought together technology leaders, policymakers, innovators, founders, investors, and rising talent for critical discussions shaping the continent’s digital trajectory.

The closing keynote, Closing the Talent Gap to Power Africa’s AI Economy, underscored the urgent need to embed digital literacy and AI skills within Africa’s education systems. Moderated by Dr. Miriam Altman, the session featured insights from Mary Mahuma (Philip Morris SA), Sipho Mtombeni (Google), and Shamiela Letsoalo (Naspers/Ecommerce Forum SA). They highlighted the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptable “AI-enabled” workers to meet the demands of future digital industries. Scalable talent models and cross-sector partnerships were identified as essential to preparing Africa’s youth for emerging technology roles.

At the AI Summit, the panel Building Africa’s Data Backbone – Governance, Infrastructure and Interoperability explored the foundations required for sustainable digital growth. Speakers from the African Development Bank, Oracle, The AI Collective, TESPOK, and the EU Delegation to the African Union emphasized that harmonised data regulation, interoperable infrastructure, and coordinated regional standards are critical to unlocking innovation, supporting AI development, and enhancing digital resilience across the continent.

AfricaIgnite highlighted the role of policy in fueling Africa’s startup growth. Panelists, including Kunbi Tinuoye (UrbanGeekz), Nikita Thakrar (Included VC), and Natalie Miller (XRGlobal), called for equitable investment practices and unified cross-border regulation to broaden capital access for founders outside major innovation hubs. Speakers noted that Africa’s next wave of high-growth ventures will rely on diverse investors, streamlined regulatory environments, and policymaking aligned with the realities faced by entrepreneurs operating across 54 markets.

The AfricaCom session Collaboration in Action – Fostering Telco Partnerships to Drive Digital Inclusion brought together leaders from MTN, Standard Bank, RMB, and the Mobile Ecosystem Forum. The discussion focused on how cross-industry alliances are expanding connectivity, enabling digital commerce, and supporting the broader digital inclusion agenda across the continent.

Beyond the main venue, the Next Gen Talent Summit at UVU Africa celebrated the continent’s rising innovators, showcasing young entrepreneurs and emerging digital talent shaping Africa’s technological future.

The 2025 festival reaffirmed Africa’s role not just as a participant in global technology landscapes but as a leader shaping inclusive, responsible, and transformative innovation.

Across its four core programmes—AfricaCom, AfricaTech, The AI Summit Cape Town, and AfricaIgnite—the festival delivered high-level keynotes, policy-shaping panels, fireside chats, startup showcases, and cross-industry networking. Central themes included responsible innovation, inclusive investment, connectivity for development, and policy harmonisation, all aimed at accelerating Africa’s digital progress.

Africa Tech Festival once again affirmed its position as the continent’s leading platform for collaboration, co-creation, and digital transformation.
