As AI Changes the Game, We Need More Women to Take a Chance on Tech

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industries at an unprecedented pace. Yet, even as innovation accelerates, gender diversity in tech remains a persistent challenge. Elizabeth, Managing Director for Commercial, EMEA, and APJ at Pipeline360, emphasizes the urgent need for more women to step into the tech world and influence the future of technology and workspaces.

It’s no secret—the tech industry has long struggled with gender representation. Employers undoubtedly need to do more to make tech careers appealing and accessible to women. But with AI reshaping the landscape, waiting isn’t an option. Change must happen now.

More women need to take a bold step forward—letting go of outdated perceptions and believing in their ability to belong at the decision-making table. Only with active female participation can we build a more equitable digital future.

When I entered the tech sector nearly 20 years ago, women represented just 9% of the workforce. Over the years, I’ve encountered assumptions about gender-based suitability for roles—barriers that can easily discourage women from pursuing tech careers.

Despite these challenges, progress is happening. Today, 32% of senior management roles in tech are held by women. But the industry itself is evolving faster than our workforce demographics. AI’s rapid integration across functions like marketing, HR, and recruitment only underscores the critical need for diverse teams.

A study by the Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender and Leadership found that 44% of AI systems exhibit gender bias, with 25% reflecting racial bias. When development teams are predominantly male, technology risks reinforcing harmful stereotypes instead of dismantling them.

This issue extends beyond tech creators—it affects users worldwide. That’s why, this International Women’s Day, I urge more women to consider a future in technology. Your perspective is not only valuable—it’s necessary.

Breaking Down Barriers to Entry

One of the biggest challenges I face as a hiring manager is simply getting women to apply. While companies must improve policies—offering flexible work arrangements and enhancing parental leave—many women still hesitate to enter the field due to the sheer challenge of balancing career and home responsibilities.

At Pipeline360, we’ve built a culture that reflects the needs of our entire team. Our commitment to equal opportunity starts from the moment a candidate expresses interest. Transparent policies—shared early in the interview process—help demystify our values and attract a broader, more diverse talent pool.

The Confidence Gap

Beyond structural issues, confidence plays a major role. I've witnessed countless highly capable women pass up opportunities due to self-doubt. Meanwhile, men often apply even if they don’t meet all the criteria. This confidence gap, rooted in societal conditioning, can be a silent career killer.

We need more young women to believe in their potential and pursue roles that shape the future. At the same time, senior women must step up to offer mentorship and support, creating a virtuous cycle of empowerment.

The Time for Change Is Now

We can’t afford to wait. Gender diversity is not a checkbox—it’s a necessity for innovation, fairness, and sustainable growth. Tech is synonymous with change, but true progress depends on inclusive leadership. Women must be part of that transformation.
