Clio Announces Acquisition of vLex to Revolutionize Legal Tech with AI-Powered Unified Platform

Clio, the world’s leading provider of legal technology, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire vLex, a global leader in legal intelligence and AI-driven research. Valued at US$1 billion in a combination of cash and stock, this landmark acquisition marks a transformative moment for the legal industry, combining two of the most innovative platforms in legal practice and research.

By integrating vLex’s advanced AI capabilities with Clio’s legal operating system—used by over 200,000 legal professionals—this union sets the stage for a new category of legal technology. It enables legal teams to research, manage, and execute legal work within a single intelligent ecosystem, bridging the business and practice of law through agentic AI.

“This is a watershed moment for Clio and the broader legal profession,” said Jack Newton, CEO and Founder of Clio. “With vLex, we’re building on 17 years of innovation by creating a platform that understands both the operational and substantive aspects of legal work. This deal redefines the boundaries of what legal technology can achieve and introduces a new standard of precision and intelligence in the delivery of legal services.”

Vincent: AI That Understands the Law

vLex’s proprietary AI, Vincent, is trusted by global legal teams—including Am Law 100 firms, courts, and legal societies. Known for its advanced cross-jurisdictional reasoning, Vincent delivers powerful capabilities such as:

  • Multimodal analysis across text, audio, and video
  • Customizable firm workflows and legal theory testing
  • Access to over a billion editorially enriched legal documents in the world’s most comprehensive global legal database

These capabilities empower legal professionals to generate deeper insights, accelerate drafting, and deliver higher-quality work at scale.

“This signals the onset of a transformative era in the legal industry,” said Lluís Faus, CEO and Co-Founder of vLex. “Together with Clio, we’re reshaping the mechanics of legal work, empowering professionals with tools that integrate deep research intelligence and operational excellence across jurisdictions.”

Unlocking the Future of Legal Services

This acquisition is Clio’s largest to date and serves as a catalyst for its long-term mission: transforming the legal experience for all. It enhances Clio’s platform capabilities and accelerates its global expansion across the trillion-dollar legal services market. With this move, Clio aims to go beyond firm management and deliver the full spectrum of legal services through one unified platform.

“This acquisition expands the boundaries of what legal technology can achieve,” added Newton. “It unlocks new levels of intelligence and scale that directly support our vision of making legal services more insightful, connected, and accessible.”

The transaction is expected to close later this year, pending customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
