Rising Threats to Healthcare Security

The healthcare sector continues to be one of the most targeted industries for cybercrime. Comparitech data shows that the first nine months of 2025 saw 293 ransomware attacks on hospitals, clinics, and direct-care providers, along with 130 additional attacks on healthcare-related businesses including pharmaceutical companies, billing services, and technology vendors. While provider attacks were consistent with 2024, incidents affecting healthcare businesses rose by 30 percent.

The financial impact is also escalating. The IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report estimates the average cost of a healthcare breach at $7.42 million—higher than any other sector. ARMS Cyber research indicates that healthcare organizations experience an average of 19 days of ransomware-related downtime, disrupting operations and potentially delaying patient care. Sophos reports that 67 percent of healthcare organizations faced a ransomware attack within the past year, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities.

Preparedness Reduces Impact

Strong incident response readiness significantly reduces breach severity and recovery time:

  • A Ponemon Institute study found that organizations with a tested incident response plan saved $2.66 million in breach costs compared to those without one.
  • The 2024 IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report revealed that organizations with trained teams and advanced automation identified and contained breaches nearly 90 days faster than the global average.

Despite these benefits, healthcare continues to struggle with a cybersecurity talent shortage:

  • 74% of healthcare organizations reported major cybersecurity staff attrition, according to Black Book Research.
  • 90% of departing professionals cited higher pay and lower stress in other industries.
  • 79% of IT leaders said staffing gaps have delayed key security projects.

The proposed Healthcare Cybersecurity Act of 2025 aims to address these staffing challenges by funding training and workforce assessments, especially for rural and smaller providers.

The eCIR certification offers comprehensive, skills-based incident response and digital forensics training. It includes hands-on simulations and interactive labs that build proficiency in threat detection, investigation, containment, and remediation.
